Dogpatch Dogs
Overview
The inspiration for the Dogpatch Dog series came from an anthropomorphic painting I did of my friend’s guinea pig El Hefe. Hefe was a sweet piggy, and his owners invented hilarious voices that match his personality. I was inspired to immortalize him in a classic portrait fit for a royal on Hefe’s passing.
Once I moved to the Dogpatch neighborhood, I met many outstanding pet personalities. Every day that I walk home from work, I come across herds of dogs, large, small, fat, and fast, playing in the Esprit park. Since owning a dog of my own isn’t in the cards currently, bringing these characters to life on canvas allowed a herd of pups to take over my small Dogpatch apartment. This project reignited my motivation to paint after focusing heavily on my career in graphic design.
Each dog is unique and paired with a costume that reflects a characteristic trait of their personality, look, name, or even a voice their owner might have bestowed on them. Some I have known for years, while others have been introduced recently through friends. I hope these characters deliver the happiness to others as they have brought to me.
